The Contested Legacy of Black Consciousness in Azania

A June 16 bilingual lecture and get-together

Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Cologne
(Google Maps Directions)
16.06. 17:00–21:00h

The South African vocal historian and performer Masello Motana is this year’s artist in residence of the Wissenschaftsforum. Motana uses melody and memory as methodological tools to revisit and revise history. On June 16, Masello Motana invites the public to memorialize the 1976 massacre of Soweto with a bilingual lecture and get-together. The artist will explore the black consciousness threads in contemporary South African history and why they are whitewashed out of the branded history that has been popularized and memorialized by the ANC government. The lecture will be live-streamed.
